RoHS Directive (2002/95/EC)
The Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) Directive was passed into law by the European Union. It affects manufacturers, sellers, distributors and recyclers of electrical and electronic equipment containing lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE). After 1 July 2006, the use of these materials will be banned in new products sold in Europe.
The key elements of RoHS are as follows:
- The Directive aims to protect human health and the environment by restricting the use of certain hazardous materials in new equipment.
- Article 4 of the RoHS Directive states:
Member states shall ensure that from 1 July 2006 new electrical and electronic equipment do not contain lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE). - The Directive does not apply to spare parts for the repair, or to the reuse, of electrical / electronic equipment put on the market before 1 July 2006.
- The Directive affects manufacturers, all sellers and recyclers of electrical equipment.
