Installation Guide

Set up HA Storage

EonStor GS / GS 1000 G3 / GS 1024 G3

This section details how to set up HA storage.

Note:

If you are using a new storage device, complete the initial settings with the Initial Setup Wizard on the device first. For more details, refer to Storage Initialization.

During the device initialization, it is recommended that you do the following:

  • Specify an identifying name for the device. The device names of the two devices in the HA storage must not be the same.
  • There must be at least two block channels, and four are recommended.
  • If you want to enable file-level HA service, make sure there is at least one file channel.

 

Before You Start

Before enabling HA service, make sure you have completed the following.

Check Hardware Requirements

The two storage devices must be of the same model, with identical memory and host board configurations.

Specify Different Device Names for each Device

The device names of the two devices in the HA storage must not be the same.

Complete the Setup of the Witness Server

For more details, refer to Set up the Witness Server.

Check Network Settings

  • The two storage devices must have the same network settings.
  • The two storage devices are able to connect to each other via the management ports. Besides, both devices must be able to connect to the witness server. For details, refer to Connect Network Cables section in Network Cabling.
  • The following IP addresses must be static IP:
    • The management IP addresses of the two devices
    • The channel IP addresses which will form the internal network
    • File channels that are used in the host network for file-level HA service
  • Make sure the RTT of the internal network is less than 250 ms.
  • If you will use a trunk group in the HA storage, create the trunk group before enabling HA service. For more details, refer to Internal Network of Connect Network Cables section in Network Cabling.

Create a Pool and Set it to Asymmetric Active/Active Mode

Each device must have at least one pool and have it set to asymmetric active/active mode. Create such a pool on each device first.

Synchronization

After you successfully enable the service, the settings will be synced between the two storage devices.

  • Block-level HA service: For the device to be paired with, the following settings will be changed to be the same as the device that initiates the pairing: TLS certificate, times settings, notification settings, initiators, VMware configurations, channels and trunk settings.
  • File-level HA service: all file services on the device to be paired with will be cleared at first and then synced with the device that initiates the pairing.
Note:

To use block-level HA service and file-level HA service at the same time, you must use the same two storage devices and pair them with each other.

 

Enable HA Service

Important!

When the first-time initialization of HA service is completed, you must restart the system on the two devices for HA service to take effect.

  1.  On a web browser, log in to EonOne using the GS device’s management IP.
  2. Go to Settings > HA service > General.
  3. Do one of the following to enable HA service:
    • If HA service has never been enabled on your storage device, check the Before you start section to prepare the two storage devices. Click Start HA service.

    • If either block-level HA service or file-level HA service has been enabled, turn on the currently desired service to enable it by clicking the toggle switch.

  4. Pair the storage devices and choose the HA service:
    • Specify the management IP address and the password of the device that is going to be paired with.
    • Select the checkbox to Enable block-level HA service and/or Enable file-level HA service. Click Next.

  5. Choose the network type and the channels/trunk groups of the internal network. Click Next.

  6. Specify at least one IP address and the port of the witness server. It is optional to provide another IP address in case any connection problem occurred. Click Next.
    Note:

    If you specify two IP addresses, make sure they connect to the same witness server.

  7. Choose the channels/trunk groups of the witness network. Click Next.

  8. Optional: For file-level HA service, the system will create one or more volumes on the paired device, which correspond to the file-level volumes on the active device, so that there will be file-level volume pairs on both device.
    • Check the one or more volume pairs created by the system. Click Next.

    • If you want a specific volume to be created in another pool on the passive device, select the volume and click Select pool. When completing selecting another pool, click OK to go back to the volume pairs page. Click Next.

  9. View the summary of the settings. If any setting needs to be modified, click Previous. To continue, click Next.

  10. Check these configurations. During the initialization, these settings on the device to be paired with will be changed, so that these configurations will be synced between the two devices. To continue, click Next. If not, click Cancel. The configurations are different when you enable file-level or block-level HA service.

  11. HA service starts to initialize. Click Close when the initialization is completed. You will be prompted to restart the system on the two devices for HA service to take effect. Click Yes to confirm the action and restart the system.

  12. After HA service is enabled, you can view the service status and the information of the HA storage from any one of the two devices.

 

Create Block-level HA Volumes

After successfully enabling block-level HA service, you can create one or more HA volumes on your two GS devices to manage the data.

Note:

You can create up to 16 HA volumes.

  1. On a web browser, log in to EonOne using one of the storage devices’ management IP.
  2. Go to Settings > HA service > Block-level HA service.
  3. Click Add an HA volume.

  4. Specify the following information:
    • Volume name
    • Primary device: choose a device to be the primary one.
    • A pool for primary/secondary device: check the pools suggested by the system. If you want to choose another, click Browse and select the desired one.
    • Volume size
    • Auto failback: If needed, enable auto failback function. This feature enables the primary device to take over the service again after it resumed from a failover.

  5. Click OK.

After the HA volume is created, you can view its service status from the HA volume list, or click Volume details to view its further information.

 

Create File-level HA Volumes

After successfully enabling file-level HA service, you can create one or more HA volumes on your two GS devices to manage the data.

Note:
  • For file-level HA service, you can only create an HA volume on the active device, and up to 16 HA volumes can be created.
  • The source pool on the active device and the target pool on the passive device must be on the same controller. For example, if the source pool is on the controller A of the active device, you can only choose the pools on the controller A of the passive device.
  1. On a web browser, log in to EonOne using the active device’s management IP.
  2. Go to Settings > HA service > File-level HA service.
  3. In the HA volume section, click Add an HA volume.

  4. Specify the following information:
    • Source pool on the active device
    • Target pool on the passive device
    • Volume name
    • File system:
      • When choosing XFS, if needed, select the checkbox to Enable case-insensitive file and folder names (file-level volumes only).
      • When choosing Btrfs, if needed, select the checkbox to Enable deduplication or Enable compression.
    • Volume size
    • Advanced ACL
    • WORM

  5. Click OK.

After the HA volume is created, you can view its service status from the HA volume list, or click Volume details to view its further information.
