Network Cabling

EonStor GS / GS 4000 G3 / GS 4060 G3

This section describes the networks in the HA storage as well as how to connect the network cables.

HA Network Introduction

The HA storage includes the following four networks.

  • Management network: The administrator manages each storage device via the management ports. HA system settings are also synced between the two storage devices via this network.
  • Internal network: Data are synced between the two storage devices via the internal network.
  • Witness network: The two storage devices each have two channels connecting to the witness server.
  • Host network: A storage device communicates with a host via a host network.

Supported Network Types

The table below shows the supported network types for different network uses.

Note:
  • Use only the network types listed here. Other network types are not supported.
  • Supported network types vary by model. Refer to the datasheet of your storage model for supported network types.
  • 40GbE host board has been discontinued (EOL) since December 31, 2022.

Before You Start

Before you start connecting network cables, make sure you have completed the following.

  • Install the hardware components of the storage devices.
  • Make sure identical host boards are installed in the same order on both controllers of each storage device.
  • Make sure the two storage devices have identical memory and host board configurations.*
  • Prepare the switches and network cables.
  • Prepare the witness server.
Note:

Refer to the Host Board and Memory Guide for the supported modules of your storage model.

Connect Network Cables

When connecting network cables, we recommend that you follow this order: management network > internal network > witness network > host network.

Management Network
  1. Connect both management ports on GS 1 to a switch at Site A.
  2. Connect both management ports on GS 2 to a switch at Site B.
  3. Make sure the two pairs of management ports can communicate with each other.

Internal Network
  1. On GS 1, connect two block channels on each controller to a switch at Site A. The channels used on the two controllers must be the same.
  2. On GS 2, connect two block channels on each controller to a switch at site B. The channels used on the two controllers must be the same.
  3. Make sure the channels used on GS 1 and GS 2 are the same.
  4. Make sure the two storage devices can communicate with each other over the internal network.

Trunk group

You can trunk (combine) multiple channels into one group to increase bandwidth.

  • If you choose to do so, make sure to create two trunk groups on each controller. Also make sure to use the same channels on both controllers.
  • Before you start the HA service, please complete trunk group settings first in EonOne at Settings > Access > Channel & network > Trunk group.
  • For more information, refer to the EonOne Software User Manual.
Note

The channels used for the internal network must be block channels. Please make sure to edit the channel type later in EonOne. For more information, refer to the EonOne Software User Manual.

Witness Network
  1. On GS 1, connect two Ethernet channels on each controller to a switch at Site A. The channels used on the two controllers must be the same.
  2. Connect the switch to the witness network.
  3. On GS 2, connect two Ethernet channels on each controller to a switch at Site B. The channels used on the two controllers must be the same.
  4. Connect the switch to the witness network.

Note:

The channels used for the witness network must be block channels. Please make sure to edit the channel type later in EonOne. For more information, refer to the EonOne Software User Manual.

Host Network

Connection Principles:

  • Each host has a physical or logical connection to each controller on both storage devices.
  • The connection is established via FC or Ethernet switches.

  1. Connect one or two ports on Host 1 to a switch at Site A.
  2. Connect four block channels on GS 1 to the switch, two per controller.
  3. Connect one or two ports on Host 2 to a switch at Site B.
  4. Connect four block channels on GS 2 to the switch, two per controller.
  5. Connect the two switches.

Note:
  • It is recommended that the two ports used on a host belong to different HBAs.
  • It is recommended that the two channels used on a controller belong to different host boards.
  • The channels used on the two controllers do not have to be the same.
  • The channels used on the two storage devices do not have to be the same.
