How to Capture Wireshark Logs?

Last modified date: Thu, 05 Mar 2026 14:29:28 GMT+8

When Should You Capture Wireshark Logs?

Wireshark captures network packets and helps diagnose network-related issues. You should collect Wireshark logs when experiencing:

  • Network connectivity issues (e.g., unable to reach a server or unstable connection).
  • Slow network performance (e.g., high latency, packet loss).
  • Application communication failures (e.g., storage system unable to communicate with a client).
  • Unexplained network disconnections.
  • Authentication or login failures related to network issues.

If unsure whether Wireshark logs are needed, please contact Infortrend Technical Support for guidance.

Steps to Capture Wireshark Logs

  1. Download and install the Wireshark software from the official website: Wireshark Official Download
  2. Close unnecessary applications to minimize background network activity.
  3. Launch Wireshark by double-clicking Wireshark.exe.
  4. Select the primary network adapter:
    • Double-click on the correct adapter to start capturing packets.
    • If unsure which adapter to use, look at the line graph representing network activity (avoid selecting adapters with a flat/stable line).
  5. Reproduce the issue and note the exact time when it occurs.
  6. Click Stop Capturing Packets from the top menu once the issue is reproduced.
  7. Click File > Save As, and save the capture in .pcapng format (default).
  8. Send the saved files to the Infortrend Technical Support team via the support portal: Infortrend Support Portal
Additional Notes:
  • If the issue is intermittent, let Wireshark capture for an extended period.
  • If troubleshooting a specific IP or protocol, consider using capture filters to limit unnecessary data.
  • If large logs are generated, you can compress the file before sending it to support.
