How to Prevent RAID Expansion Failure?

Last modified date: Thu, 05 Mar 2026 14:22:55 GMT+8

Symptoms

RAID expansion does not complete or stalls during the process. The system may freeze, stop progressing, or show an error in the event log.

Possible Cause

Expansion may fail if new drives are not fully functional, or if the logical drive (LD) is already in a degraded state. Incompatible or mismatched drive conditions can also cause the process to halt.

Recommended Solution

  1. Make sure the logical drive (LD) is in a normal state before initiating expansion; do not expand when the LD is degraded.
  2. Ensure newly added drives are healthy and fully functional.
  3. If adding multiple drives, ensure the system is stable and all drives are online before proceeding.

Preventive Action

  • Always verify logical drive and physical drive health before initiating RAID expansion.
  • Monitor system logs and drive status during and after expansion.
  • Do not perform expansion while a rebuild is still in progress.
