Migrating a VMware Windows Virtual Machine

KS / KS 5000U / KSi 5008U

IEC supports migration of a VMware Windows VM by importing a VMDK image and creating a new virtual machine from that image.

Overview

The migration process includes the following tasks:

  • Export the VMware VM as a VMDK file
  • Upload the VMDK image to IEC
  • Create a new VM by using the uploaded image
  • Access the new VM in IEC

Procedure

  1. Export VMware VM Image (VMDK)
    • Access the VMware management interface.
    • Perform a VM backup operation
    • select the file format as VMDK.
  2. Uploading the VMDK Image
    • Go to EonKube > Virtualization > Images.
    • Click Create.
    • Select a namespace and specify a name for this image.
    • Select a file, click Upload File to upload a VMDK file.
    • Click Create.
  3. Creating the Virtual Machine in IEC
    • Go to EonKube > Virtualization > Virtual Machines.
    • Click Create to add a new virtual machine.
    • Configure the following settings:
      • Namespace: Choose a namespace. (e.g. Default)
      • Name: Specify an identifying name. (e.g.migrate-win19)
      • (Optional) Description: If needed, specify the description.
    • Configure basics resource allocation.
      • CPU: Specify the number of cores to reserve for the resources of CPU. e.g.4 cores
      • Memory: Specify the capacity to reserve for the resources of memory.e.g.16 GB
      • Leave SSHKey blank.
    • Complete Story Configuration.
      • For the default disk-0, select the VMDK file.
      • Ensure the following settings:
        • Type: Disk
        • Bus: SATA
        • Set the size to the default file size or increase it if necessary

      • The default configuration includes 2 network interfaces (nic-0, nic-1).
      • Select the appropriate VM Network (other defaults, Model=virtio).
    • Configure the node scheduling.
      • Leave as default, or select "Run VM on specific node" to specify a particular node on which to create the VM.
    • Verify all settings.
    • Click Create.

The process may take a few minutes. When the creation is completed, you can view the newly-created virtual machine in the virtual machine list.

  4. Accessing VM
    • Go to EonKube > Virtualization > Virtual Machines.
    • Connect to the VM via the Console (Open in Web VNC) or using the OS communication protocol.
    • For Windows VMs, use RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol): C:\> mstsc administrator@172.27.111.128
    • Log in using the local administrator account.
