Background: College Adopts Sophisticated 3D Equipment

In order to meet students' demand for conducting 3D animation projects, the college spent over US$20 million to purchase 3D equipment that was also used in the production of the movie Avatar. Within the Chinese movie industry, this represented the highest level of equipment available and is of extreme importance to 3D animation production and post-production processes.

The equipment consists of four main elements: Maya and 3D MAX 3D animation production systems; 3D movie post-production systems including Smoke editing, Flame special effects, Autodesk coloring, Burn rendering and movie subtitle editing; 3D theater screening systems; IS Cloud storage and network systems. These elements taken together can provide the necessary support for animation design, filming, production, business cooperation, service outsourcing, movie production site management and more.

Solution: RDsystem Technology’s IS Cloud Solution and Infortrend’s Fibre-host EonStor DS Arrays

In animation applications, image-intensive tasks such as 3D model rendering and video post-production feature high requirements for hardware processing power and network bandwidth. In China's movie sector, rendering platforms have traditionally been shared production platforms for multiple applications or users; storage systems were only used for complimentary data storage. However, a long-term focus on processing instead of data storage had led to data bottlenecks.

RDsystem Technology Limited, an Infortrend partner in China with many years of storage experience, used IS Cloud nodes and Infortrend's EonStor DS 8Gb/s Fibre storage arrays to design a comprehensive cloud storage solution based on the customer's requirements. As part of the solution, RDsystem Technology helped set up a rendering cloud storage foundation featuring a storage capacity of 384TB and storage network bandwidth of 4GB/s (real performance numbers).

The solution ensures that rendering tasks can be completed smoothly, with the high performance and I/O rates delivering excellent quality and efficiency. In addition, the solution offers excellent storage scalability and a user-friendly management interface.
