SVOD platform CuriosityStream deploys Infortrend’s EonStor DS 3060 storage to meet high read/write speed business needs

CuriosityStream is a subscription video on demand (SVOD) platform that provides affordable and ad-free factual television content online to its subscribers on demand via websites, mobile apps and streaming devices. CuriosityStream was experiencing a large amount of data growth and expected this trend to continue and thus needed a new storage system to ensure the high productivity and smooth workflow necessary in its operations.

High read-write speeds a must

CuriosityStream has an Apple Xsan storage network utilizing ATTO’s Thunderbolt-enabled 2162 and 2082 Desklink Devices with several applications running on it, like Final Cut Pro X, and Adobe After Effects, to which it added Infortrend’s EonStor DS 3060 system to accommodate its growing storage needs. As an SVOD platform involved in video storage and editing, CuriosityStream requires high read-write speeds to support its services and the multiple editors it has simultaneously working on multiple video streams. Ray German described the performance of the Infortrend EonStor DS 3060 as “fantastic.”

High density and large capacity are necessary too

Outfitted with sixty 4TB drives in a 4U height chassis, the EonStor DS 3060 boasts strong storage capacity and has a smaller physical storage footprint. After RAID 5 formatting with 5 LUNs, the EonStor DS 3060 had a 200TB capacity. The EonStor DS 3060 can be linked to expansion closures, scalable up to 2,160TB by using five expansion enclosures and 6TB drives. This means that it will be easy for CuriosityStream to expand its capacity if necessary anytime in the future.

Easy deployment and great help from Infortrend

CuriosityStream took only one week to deploy its existing storage arrays to the new EonStor DS 3060, including data migration, and used only two staff members to do so. CuriosityStream finished all this in-house and this was the first time they had deployed the EonStor DS 3060. “Since we were able to integrate the solution ourselves, I can conservatively say we easily saved $50,000 to $100,000 dollars. Also, when we had questions about deployment, Infortrend’s support team was very helpful.”

Future cooperation

CuriosityStream will be adding another EonStor DS 3060 to their SAN network if their storage needs keep growing, something Mr. German believes will happen in the near future.
